Groceries & Food

Germany is home to some wonderful regional cooking and traditional foods - if you love hearty plates and cozy restaurants, you won't be disappointed!  Some of the most popular plates include Schnitzel (pounded veal, pork, or chicken steak fried in a light batter), Spätzle (small dumplings in a cheesy sauce and topped with fried onions), and Schweinshaxe (roasted ham hock) - and that doesn't even begin to touch the wide variety of sausages, cheeses, pretzels, and pastries.  Yum!

One of the most fun things about German food is how seasonal it is.  For instance, White Asparagus season (Spargelzeit), which only runs from April to June, is quite popular with Germans, and many restaurants will feature the dish on their menu in various forms (salads, soups, hot dishes).  You will see stands selling white asparagus and strawberries throughout this season, and then abruptly on June 24, they vanish until next year.   Another fun season is the Goose (Gans) season, which runs from mid-November through the Christmas holidays.  I never thought I would like goose, but the balance of savory and sweet that runs through the goose, gravy, potato balls, red cabbage, and chestnuts is truly mouth-watering.  My husband and I make it a point to go out for goose dinner several times each season!

Fruits and vegetables are usually very high quality, even in supermarkets, and buying Bio (organic) products is not cost-prohibitive like it is in other countries.  You can usually purchase Bio over standard produce for just a few Eurocents more.  Many towns have local farm stands that make for a fun way to purchase produce (Hofgut Hohenwald in Kronberg is just one example:  http://www.hofgut-hohenwald.de/)

Sometimes, you just want to buy ingredients for a meal you would make at home, or a change from traditional German food.  That's OK, and we've got some places for you to check out, to satisfy those cravings!
